Hadern  is a Boss and Enemy in Mortal Shell. Hadern can be found at the Tutorial Area and you will only be able to use a sword, the dodge and harden mechanic to beat him.

You can visit Hadern for the Shell variation.

Hadern Information

  • Hadern is the Tutorial Boss and also the Guardian of all Weapons of Mortal Shell. He will fight you using the Hallowed Sword with the Mechanical Spike and can use the Hardening ability.
  • You will only have one chance to defeat him during the Tutorial. If your health drops to 0, the tutorial will end and you won't get the Glimpse of Reverie as a reward.
  • In order to unlock each Weapon, you'll need to find the statues holding them. There's one statue at the entrance of each major area. Interact with the book next to the statue and you'll faint. Once you wake up you'll fight Hadern while he uses the weapon you want to unlock. Once defeated, you'll acquire the Weapon.
  • If The Virtuous Cycle DLC is installed, after unlocking all four of the base game weapons, Hadern can be fought in Fallgrim Tower to unlock the Axatana weapon and Hadern as a shell. Hadern also becomes available as a merchant. This fight is a two-phase fight, with Hadern first using the katanas before fully healing and switching to the axe form.

How to Beat Hadern

Hadern Boss Guide:

Hadern can be a challenging foe, and he will likely beat you on your first try, but if you play safe and time your hardening right, you can beat him and earn a Glimpse of Reverie which provides you 15 Glimpses.

Tutorial Area - Hallowed Sword

Hadern use the same sword as you do, the Hallowed Sword. He will also be able to use the Mechanical Spike ability which you won't.

When the fight starts he will run towards you and jump with his sword, you can dodge behind him and strike him one or two times. The Hallowed sword has medium reach, so you will need to stay close to him to deal damage. Dodge his attacks and then strike back, if he swings back at you use your hardening ability to avoid the damage, dodge backwards and wait for the hardening to recover to engage him again.

You will sometimes stagger him with your attacks, when this happens try to keep pushing to deal as much damage as you can. Remember that you can use the hardening while attacking.

Remember that you can find 3x Mortal Token on the tutorial area that you can use during this fight.

Temple Grounds - Smoldering Mace

Hadern will be using the Smoldering Mace during this fight. The smoldering Mace is slow, but can cover a wide area.

Stay near him and wait until he attacks you. Use your dodge or harden to avoid damage and then strike back.

When he uses the Foundry Stone ability stay back and wait until it wears off

Eternal Narthex - Hammer and Chisel

Hadern will be using the Hammer and Chisel during this fight. The hammer and chisel is a fast weapon but deals very low damage. Eredrim is a good choice as he can tank the damage without problem.

Stay near him and try to attack him as much as you can. It's hard to dodge his attacks because they happen fast, but you can use your harden to stagger him.

Try baiting the jump attack by keeping distance from him. the attack is easily parryable with a little practice. After the 2 parry do a ripost. This will make him staggered so do as much damage as possible. Repeat until dead.

When he uses the Perfumed Censer run as far away as you can or use you harden to avoid the damage.

Abandoned Chamber - Martyr's Blade

Hadern will be using the Martyr's Blade during this fight. The Martyr's Blade is a slow weapon but deals very high damage. Tiel is a good choice if you are good at dodge.

Stay near him and bait him to attack you, use your dodge and strike back. He will be very slow, so be patient and time your dodge right.

Notes & Trivia

  • Rotting Christ BGM is ...Pir Threontai from Aealo
  • The Glimpse of Reverie he drops if beaten in the tutorial fight is NOT required for the Bars Tended trophy for reaching max familiarity with all items. Completionists can still acquire one (along with a quenching acid) by defeating him in any weapon challenge in New Game+.
  • Entering his shell is required to leave his boss arena after the Axatana boss fight in The Virtuous Cycle DLC, so will invalidate a No Shell or Obsidian Dark run.

When he reaches 0 HP with the Blades, he will switch to the Axe mode and his health will fully restore for a Phase 2 fight.
In Phase 2 he can dodge like crazy.
Beware that the water in the arena can get deep in places, restricting your movement, including dodge/roll.

      • To clarify the Recollection Abilities (Ascent, Inheritance, Yearning, Foresight):

You need to have obtained the Shell and learned its name.
You do not need to purchase the Ability on the other Shell.
You do need to purchase the Ability here at 50% of the Tar/Glimpse cost.
