Shells in Mortal Shell are an integral mechanic of the game, essentially acting as the game's classes. Shells are the lost remains of defeated warriors that are scattered across the land. Once the Foundling awakens these shells, it will be able to occupy these bodies and learn new skills to aid in combat. Also, as the game progresses, players can strengthen the Foundling's connection to each Mortal Shell to better harness its innate talents, to recover venerable weapons, to study devastating arcane powers, and more.

How to acquire Shells

Shells can be found around the World. Once a player finds a shell it will become permanently unlocked. In order to use the Shell's unique Abilities, players will first need to discover the Shell's name by talking to Sester Genessa and spending Tar.

What happens when your shell dies?

When you reach 0 health while inside a Shell, the Foundling will be expelled. From here you can either retrieve the shell or fight as the Foundling. If you retrieve the shell and reach 0 health again the Foundling will die and you will return to the last checkpoint.

What is the difference between each Shell?

Each Shell has its own unique characteristics, as well as Abilities and mechanics providing different playstyles. Players will only be able to unlock and use the Shell abilities after discovering its name, which can be done by spending Tar.

Can you play without a Shell?

Players may choose to skip using Shells on their playthrough for a more challenging experience in which case they will have to fight as the Foundling, which can withstand only 1 hit. Additionally, the game features unique dialogue when speaking with NPCs while not in a Shell.

In order to renounce all shells, you'll need to visit the Strange Altar located at Fallgrim. Interact with the altar and you'll renounce all Shells and acquire a unique Black Skin (Dark  Obsidian) for your Foundling. The Dark Obsidian Foundling is functionally identical to the regular Foundling, only you are granted the ability to harden in the air. 

There is a hidden trophy for beating the game without ever acquiring a shell, as well as one for beating the final boss as the Dark Obsidian Foundling. These can both be acquired in a single playthough.  

How to obtain Shades (skins) for each Shell

Players can obtain 3 Skins per Shell and two for the Foundling. This is done by feeding different items to Gorf the frog.
